Pedigree Beef Breeds : Belmont Red


History

In 1954 there was an obvious need in the Australian Tropics for a breed of cattle which would have a more placid temperament, be highly fertile, and utilise the environment and its pastures in the most efficient manner to give high weight gains The Belmont Red was therefore conceived at Belmont Research Station as a composite breed using Africander (African Sanga) and Hereford-Shorthorn (Bos taurus) to fulfil that need – and further developed by commercial breeders.

Rigid selection for the traits required has resulted in the evolution of a breed of "Australian Made" cattle which has been remarkably successful when compared, under trial conditions with older breeds and their crosses. 

Since the original Aus-Meat Comparison Trials commenced in 1988, the Belmont Red has achieved an overall standard in beef production better than any other breed or cross breds. More recently Belmont Reds have achieved an unparalleled run of wins and high placing's in 'The Paddock to Plate Challenge'. The fertility of the breed has assisted many beef producers to correct reproductive deficiency in their herds and this reputation is freely accepted by the industry. The placid nature of the Belmont Red is widely recognised by beef producers who have handled them.

Characteristics

The Belmont Red is phenotypically (and genetically) a mix of Bos indicus and Bos taurus. It has a smooth short haired coat which is predominantly red in colour, they may have some white occasinally. Belmonts are of a moderate size and have a good conformation in relation to beefing quality.

This breed reaches an early sexual maturity at about 10-14 months, it has good fertlity also. Belmonts are reknowned for their docility.

    Pedigree Beef Breeds : Belted Galloway


    History

    The unique appearance of Belted Galloway cattle inspires many questions about their origins. With black, red or dun color sandwiched about a white middle, they are familiarly known as 'Belties' among breeders of the animals. Though references to 'sheeted' cattle occur in literature and art as early as the 11thCentury, the Belted Galloway's first recorded history indicates that they developed during the 16th Century in the former Galloway district of Scotland. 

    The Belted Galloway is essentially the same in origin and characteristics as the Galloway and only differ by the distininctve white belt that is thought to have been introduced by an infusion of Dutch Lakenvelder blood, probably in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, according to "History of the Belted Galloway Society Inc." The Herd Book of the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. (1951-1971) by A. Mims Wilkinson Jr. 

    Historians writings differ somewhat, but upon three points they generally agree regarding the origin of the Galloway/Belted Galloway. The breed is recognised to be a very ancient one, with obscure origins and its name derived from the word Gallovid or Gaul. The Gauls were the native inhabitants of the regality known as the Province of Galloway. The cattle of the region were said to be dark, smooth-polled, wavy-haired with undercoats like beavers fur and for centuries they went unnamed, referred to only as the black cattle of Galloway.

    From this coastal environment of winds and damp cold, combined with an undulating terrain of moors, granitic hills, heathery mountain ranges and fertile glens emerged the Galloway breed of cattle. 

    Though much has been written of the history of British cattle since the middle of the 18th century, the period immediately before that is almost without a record. Historian Hector Boece (1570), writing about the Galloway, says, "In this region ar mony fair ky and oxin of qubilk the flesh is right delicius and tender." Ortelius, the historian writing in 1573, says, "In Carrick (then part of Galloway) are oxen of large size, whose flesh is tender, sweet and juicy." 

    The Galloway breed of cattle became important during the Scoto-Saxon period, and the breeders of Galloway enjoyed the export of cheese and hides. Later the cattle were sold in considerable numbers to English farmers who sent them to Smithfield market after a fattening period on English grass. It is said that the Galloway breed was never crossed with the other breeds. It is not known where the polled character was acquired by the Galloway breed because in its beginning many of the cattle were horned. However, many writers during the last part of the 1700's and early 1800's mentioned polled Galloway cattle, and the breeders decided they liked the polled characteristic and started selecting their cattle for the character. Most of the early cattle in the Galloway district were black, but red, brown, brindles, and cattle with white markings were not uncommon. 

    In 1851, a fire at the Highland Agricultural Museum at Edinburgh destroyed all the historical records and pedigrees of the Galloway collected prior to that time. Eleven years later (1862), a Polled Herd Book was published and it included the Galloway, Aberdeen, and Angus breeds. In 1878 the Galloway Cattle Society of Great Britain initiated its own volume of pedigrees. The first exportation of Galloways to North America came in 1853 to the Graham brothers of Toronto, Canada. Michigan State College, Lansing, imported the first Galloways to America in 1866. The American Galloway Breeders' Association organized in 1882 and Volume I of the North American Galloway Herd, published in 1883, listed American and Canadian Galloways.

    Characteristics

    The Belted Galloway is a very distinctive breed with its characteristic white belt which encircles the body, the rest of the body being black, dun or red in colour. The distinctive white belt found in Belted Galloways often varies somewhat in width and regularity but usually covers most of the body from the shoulders to the hooks. 
    The white contrast to the black coat, which may have a brownish tinge in the summer, sets the breed apart with its striking colour pattern.

    They are naturally polled hill cattle are eminently suited for converting rough grazing into lean meat. Their double coat of long hair, to shed the rain, and soft undercoat, for warmth, eliminates the need for expensive housing. 

    The cows are long living (17-20 years), regular breeders noted for the amount of rich milk they produce, therefore rearing a good calf. They can be used to breed a good Blue Grey by putting them to a Whitebred Shorthorn. These Blue Greys and the pure bred cows cross well with Continental sires, such as Charolais, Simmental, Limousin and Salers. 

    It is claimed that the Belted Galloways are larger, milk heavier, and grow more rapidly than the parental breed. 

    A mature Belted Galloway Bull can weigh between 815 and 955 kilograms although some are smaller and others larger. A cow ranges from 400 to 600 kilograms, new born heifers weigh, on average around 30 kilograms and a bull calf can be 35 kilograms and sometimes more. "Beltie" calves weaned at 205 days, were about one half their mother's weight. 

    The Beltie as a beef animal produces exceptionally lean and flavorful meat, with carcass dressed weights well in excess of 60 percent of live weight. 

    These calves, having hybrid vigor, grow rapidly and produce the quality of beef without excess fat similar to purebred Belties. Their most important trait, the economical production of beef under range conditions, stems from the fact that Galloways have been bred from their origin for beef production.

    Statistics

    The "Beltie" Breed is naturally polled and when crossed with another breed it will prevent the growth of horns in virtually all cases. 

    Belted Galloways are known for their ease of calving producing a live calf every year. Some Belted Galloways have had two separate calves in one year. 

    “Belties” are able to adapt to a variety of climatic conditions. They have good foraging abilities, ensuring that they thrive where other breeds fail. The coat is shed in hot weather, thus making the “Beltie” a highly adaptable and versatile breed for a variety of climatic conditions. 

    The breed was evolved in a harsh environment, resulting in high disease resistance and the ability to survive in the toughest of conditions. Belted Galloway breeders find that their cattle are more resistant to pink eye, insects and foot problems than many other breeds. Congenital problems such as dwarfism are unknown to Belted and other Galloways. 

    Belties do not develop much fat under their hides; instead they have a double coat of hair consisting of a dense, soft, short undercoat and a long, shaggy overcoat, which is usually cast in hot weather. This double coat provides excellent protection in cold, wet, windy weather. In contrast, most other British beef breeds put on a thicker layer of uneconomical fat under their hides to provide the necessary insulation for protection against severe weather conditions.

    Comparative

    Growth 

    Tests have shown that the Galloway requires the least amount of feed per kilogram of weight gain making the cattle efficient converters. Belted Galloways consume more varieties of flora than any other breed on tests conducted in Germany 

    Hardiness 

    The Belted Galloway's heavy, double hair coat means that heat loss is reduced, winter feed costs are significantly less and rain hardly penetrates in cold, wet weather. The Belted Galloway cow has about 4000 hairs to the square inch making the coat resistant to severe cold. 

    Meat 

    Belted Galloway Beef has been shown in a research study conducted at the University of Guelph - to have a total fat content of about 2% an extremely low percentage. The same study showed that the Belted Galloway Beef tested only contained about 1% saturated fat. In addition it showed that Belted Galloway beef had the same fat content as chicken and fish so fits in well with a healthy diet. Belted Galloway beef is exceptionally tender, full of flavour and juicy and were the winners of the 2003 Sydney Royal Show "Beef Taste Test". 

    Data collected in the U.S. has shown that the beef dresses out at 60 - 62% of live weight making it a very profitable breed.

    Pedigree Beef Breeds : Blonde d'Aquitaine


    History

    The breed originates from the the Aquitaine district in south west of France embracing the area of the Garonne valley and the Pyrenees. 

    Three strains of cattle comprise the Blonde d'Aquitaine. The are the Garonnais strain, the Quercy, and the Blonde des Pyrenees. The Blonde d'Aquitaine trace to cattle that were in the area in the middle ages, when blonde cattle were used to pull carts carrying weapons and goods. The cattle were valued as draft oxen and for their meat and milk. 

    The Blonde d'Aquitaine breed exhibits a history of selective breeding pressures that have resulted in the economically valuable breed that we know today. Its muscle development, hardiness and docility are products of its early development as a draft animal. 

    Blondes today are one of the best and most popular beef breeds in France because of their lean muscling, high growth rate, docility and calving ease due to a high tail setting, large pelvic area and light bone. Numbers in France are growing at about 5% per year. They are the third largest breed in France (with over 480,000 cows) and are quickly catching the Limousin and Charolais breeds. An extensive progeny testing program has ensured continual improvement in the breed, which is reflected in its popularity.

    Blondes range in colour from nearly white to nearly red. However, the golden wheat colour, often with lighter rings around the eyes and muzzle, on the inner side of the legs, under the belly and on the shins is typical. The Blonde colour is not at all dominant in crosses. Even at the 7/8ths Blonde level, animals will sometimes carry the colouring of the minority breed. 

    The head of the Blonde d'Aquitaine is long from poll to muzzle. The forehead and muzzle are broad, the face triangular. Horns are light in colour and thick at the base, darkening at the tip. Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle can be horned or polled, polled fullbloods have been bred in Canada and have been exported to the USA and Sweden.

    Mature Fullblood Blonde bulls typically weigh 1600-2600 pounds with some reaching 3000 pounds. Mature Fullblood cows normally weigh 1400-1800 pounds, 1500 pounds being the average and yearling heifers weigh around 1000 pounds. 

    Blondes are extremely adaptable and are hardy foragers. In addition to the breed’s basic hardiness, its light colour, short hair, active sweat glands and localised muscle control over skin movement (similar to Brahman cattle and horses) give Blondes an added advantage in those kinds of environments.

    Statistics

    Easy calving - They are fertile, easy calvers and produce very growthy calves. A number of calf characteristics contribute to easier passage thru the birth canal: (1) the calf’s birth weight is spread over a much longer body, (2) a finer bone structure, (3) light muscling at birth, (4) smooth shoulders, and (5) a small triangular head. Cow characteristics, such as width of the pelvis and an inherited hooks-to-pins slope of the rump, also contribute to calving ease. Tests have shown up to 98% unassisted calving from Fullblood Blonde cows. There are many breeders using Blonde bulls on crossbred cows who find that they have far fewer calving problems than with any breed previously tried. 

    Rapid growth - Hybrid Vigour and Blonde genetics combine to give exceptional growth under many conditions. 

    Quiet temperament - Blondes are typically docile and easy to work.

    Heat tolerant - Blondes may well be the most adaptable breed in existence. They flourish in all climates in the USA as well as in Canada and the Tropics. 

    Extra weight at weaning - Adjusted 205 day weaning weights range from 500 pounds to 700 pounds depending on sex, feed and management. Weaning weights of 600 pounds are typical, without creep feed, for areas with plentiful and rich grass.

    High yield carcasses - Efficient production of lean red meat is their primary advantage. Feedlot and carcass tests consistently show superior feed efficiency and a low fat to lean ratio for Blondes and Blonde crosses. Blonde meat marbles, is tender and tasty but does not carry excess external fat. It is unusual for a Blonde to have more than 0.2-0.3 inch of external fat. The breed’s remarkable length and highly developed hind quarter and loin produce a higher percentage of the more valuable steak and roast cuts. 

    Feed efficiency - Blondes are unsurpassed in feed efficiency. In feed lot tests they consistently convert feed at the rate of 5.3-6.5 pounds of feed per pound of gain. Typical feed lot performance for other breeds is more like 7.5-8.5 pounds feed/pounds gain. Blondes are hardy foragers and readily convert low grade forage to efficient gains. It is not unusual for Blonde calves to gain 3 pounds per day on milk and good grass. 

    Muscle growth requires much less energy (feed) input pounds/pound than does bone or fat. Thus, Blonde characteristics such as a finer bone structure and minimum external fat, along with well developed muscles, are ideal for feed efficiency. Of course, the basic hardiness of Blondes is also essential to their efficiency.

    Comparative

    Calving 

    Blondes consistently prove their ease of calving, with five out of seven trials reviewed rating them easier than Charolais, and four out of seven placing them better than - or equal to - Limousins.

    Irish trial work has shown calf mortality within 24 hours of birth to be lower with Blondes (2%) than with the Limousin (3.1%) or Charolais (2.9%). Work done in Yugoslavia with Simmental suckler cows showed the Blonde produced far fewer assisted births (5.6%) than Charolais (16.2%), Simmental (11.1%) and Hereford (12.2%).

    Other studies show the breed to have an advantage over other beef breeds when mated with Friesian cows, with one trial finding that only 6.1% of calvings requiring assistance, compared with 17% for Charolais, 11.9% for Limousin and 17.8% for Belgian Blue. 

    Meat


    Evidence from the MLC shows that the Blonde's superior killing out means its carcase growth rates compare favourably with any other major breed. 

    While it's daily live weight gain may be lower than the Simmental or Charolais, the small amount it loses in total growth is more than recouped through its ability to produce quality carcases. Major trials in several countries have underlined these findings. 

    In a New Zealand trial of 120 beef breeds on Aberdeen Angus cows, Blonde sired crossbreds outperformed all others, achieving 68.3% lean meat (other breeds 67.1 - 62.4%), with an advantage of 16.4% carcase weight and 22.4% saleable meat over the pure Angus control group. 

    Continental work has shown the Blonde to have superior feed conversion efficiency to main competitor breeds. German work rated Blonde bulls ahead of Simmental, Limousin and Peidmontese x German Brown bulls. 

    Many studies from all over the world confirm the Blonde's outstanding conformation and ability to produce carcases that contain more meat, extra meat in the higher priced cuts, lower bone content and lower dressing out than competitor breeds when crossed with a wide variety of damtypes. 

    MLC work identifies advantages like the breed's lower backfat levels, which - at 2.4 mm - are similar to Limousin, but below those of other major breeds (Simmental 3.6 mm; Charolais 3.3 mm; Hereford 3.8 mm). 

    Data from 25 years of testing at the Egtved beef testing station in Denmark showed that Blondes achieved better eye muscle area than other breeds from smaller carcases, which means much more meat and less waste for abattoirs and butchers. 

    In their trial's carcases from 13 month old Blondes averaged 92.8 square centimetres eye muscle area from a live weight of 576 kgs, a significant advantage over it's nearest rival, the Charolais (87.4 sq cm, 627 kgs) and the other breeds tested (Limousin 86.1 sq cm, 557 kgs; Simmental 80.6 sq cm, 650 kgs; Hereford 71.2 sq cm, 587 kgs). 

    This is supported by Yugoslavian trials which show that, when crossed with Simmental x Holstein heifers, Blondes sires produced eye muscles averaging 100.9 sq cms (Limousin 95.9; Charolais 91.6; Simmental 84.0). On pure Simmental, Blondes produced a 102 sq cm eye muscle (Charolais 94.6; Limousin 94.4; Simmental 89.2). Both male and female Blonde-sired animals maintained their advantage when the carcasses were dressed out.

    Pedigree Beef Breeds : Bonsmara


    History

    The Bonsmara originates from South Africa, it has been scientifically bred and strictly selected for economical production in extensive cattle grazing in sub-tropical climates. In 1937 it was generally noted that British breeds did not have the required heat tolerance for the sub tropics and that the Afrikaner did not perform as well in terms of calving regularity. Professor Jan Bonsma decided to test different breed combinations at the Messina Livestock Research Station.

    Bulls of five British Beef breeds were used on Afrikaner cows and the progeny then performance tested. After pilot trials it was decided to continue only with the better performing Hereford and Shorthorn cross-breds. Ultimately three-quarter Afrikaners were mated to half-breeds to obtain progeny with 5/8 Afrikaner and 3/8 Hereford or Shorthorn blood.

    The first results were already encouraging. Under the management circumstances prevailing at Mara in those days, the weaning weights of the crossbred cows were on average 195kg at 240 days (about 20% higher than those of the three parent breeds). Likewise the calving percentages of the crossbred cows were appreciably higher. The calf mortality was much lower than in the British Beef breeds and close to that of the more resistant Afrikaners. 

    Through strict selection of breeding animals rapid progress was made. Within 20 years after the initial cross-breeding trials a superior cattle breed, performing better than other breeds in the bushveld of the Northern Transvaal, had been established. 

    The name "Bonsmara" was derived from "Bonsma", the man who played a major role in the development of the breed, and "Mara", the farm on which the animals were bred. 

    Interestingly, Bonsma had a unique method of scale photography, so Bonsmara is the only breed in the world that can boast a pictorial genealogy from the very beginning of the breeding work until the new breed was established. 

    The Bonsmara has become so popular that it has grown to be numerically the strongest beef breed in South Africa in less than 25 years.

    The Bonsmara is red in colour with a blend of Bos indicus and Bos taurus attributes. They are horned but must be de-horned to conform with breed standards. Body conformation and traits have all been selected for to satisfy the commercial requirements of todays market. 

    Today all inspected and approved purebred Bonsmaras are branded with the Bonsmara symbol on the right shoulder.

    Pedigree Beef Breeds : Boran


    History

    The Boran developed in eastern Africa, more specifically the Borana plateau in southern Ethiopia. This area was where all the different breeds migrated through to their various destinations in Africa. The Boran developed into the dominant breed of eastern Africa and especially in Kenya, where the Kenyan Boran Cattle Breeders' Society (BCBS) have bred the "Improved Boran" since the turn of the century. 

    As far as can be determined this is the only breed in Africa to have this specific combination of genes.

    Genetic studies at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) have shown that the genetic composition of the Kenyan Boran is unique. The genetic background of the Kenyan Boran is predominantly zebu, the breed also contains taurine background of two separate origins. A European-Near East taurine background of some antiquity and most likely also from recent crossbreeding and an African indigenous taurine background which is not found in any Asian zebu crosses such as Sahiwal or Brahman" O.Hanotte.     The Boran is a breed that had its last infusion of 'new' genes in 700 AD. The Boran is therefore not a synthetic or compound breed that have been crossbred in the last few decades. It has been bred as a pure breed for 1300 years. The importance of this to the commercial breeder is that the Boran will have much stronger hybrid vigour than modern compound breeds. 

    Today Boran breeders have greatly improved the beef conformation of their animals, but they have never lost sight of the important qualities of the indigenous Boran.

    Characteristics

    The Boran is medium in size with a short head, small ears, loose dewlap and a large hump above the shoulders. They can be horned or polled. They vary in height from 114cm to 147cm tall, and in weight bulls weigh approximately 500kg to 850kg. Cows weigh about 380kg to 450kg Their skin is loose, thick and extremely pliable for added insect repellence plus it is dark pigmented with fine short hair for heat tolerance. Hair colour can be a range of colours except brindle or solid black. 

    The Boran male and female share breed points, the sexes, however, show marked dimorphism - the female being notably small, whilst the male grows to a large size. 
    The cow has a well-carried udder with strong attachments and neat, small teats, in contrast to some Asian Zebu breeds. Boran heifers reach puberty at an average age of 385 days. She is an excellent mother, not only will she feed her calf so well that high weaning weights are attainable, but she guards against predators, and will never allow her calf to get lost in the bush. Calving problems hardly exist. Calves at birth weigh an average of 28 kg for males and females, 25 kg. 

    Boran cattle have developed adaptive traits of crucial importance for their survival. Some of these characters are - the ability to withstand periodic shortage of water and feed, ability to walk long distances in search of water and feed and ability to digest low quality feeds. The herd instinct of the Boran makes it easy to manage and survive in bush country. They will always stay together and can 'graze on the trot'. 

    The well-developed beef conformation shows up in carcase appraisals. The depth of eye muscle, marbling, even fat cover and ratio of hind to forequarter make the Boran difficult to beat, hence the preference of Kenya butchers for young, well-finished Boran steers.

    Carcass Quality
    Trials in Nebraska, U.S.A, shows that the Boran and its crosses score consistently better than other Zebu Breeds for meat tenderness, carcass marbling and rib eye area.

    "Animals with Boran genes have a relatively low maintenance requirement. This was substantiated in a recent study at the US Meat Animal Research Centre in Nebraska". (Haile-Mariam, Sprinkle et al. 1998) 

    "…young Boran animals can make dramatic recoveries after drought years when pasture conditions improve" (Coppock, 1994)

    Pedigree Beef Breeds : Brahman


    History

    The Brahman breed (also known as Brahma) originated from Bos indicus cattle from India, the "sacred cattle of India". Through centuries of exposure to inadequate food supplies, insect pests, parasites, diseases and the weather extremes of tropical India, the native cattle developed some remarkable adaptations for survival which cattle producers in the USA found useful and advantageous.

    Three principal strains of Indian cattle were brought to the United States and used in the development of the Brahman breed; the Guzerat, the Nelore and Gir. The Krishna Valley strain was also introduced and used but to a lesser extent. The general similarity of the Guzerat strain to the cattle selected and developed in the USA would indicate that cattlemen working with the breed have generally preferred this type. 

    It is said that during the period from 1910 to 1920, many cattle in the south-western part of Texas and the coastal country along the Gulf of Mexico showed considerable evidence of Bos indicus breeding. Naturally, many of the bulls that were used were the result of crosses with other breeds. Some breeders attempted to keep the stock pure, but they were in the minority. 
    Since there are records of less than 300 imported Brahmans (most of which were bulls), it must be assumed that other breeds supplied the foundation animals for the breed. 
    The bulls were used on cows of the European breeds and on the descendants of these crosses. By the fifth generation (31/32) the offspring carried not only a preponderance of Bos indicus breeding but selection pressure had permitted the development of an animal generally regarded as superior to the original imports for beef production. 

    Today, its use in crossbreeding has become a great tool for the production of steers for various purposes. Its meat is highly appreciated in the five continents.
    The Brahman has become so essential in the tropics that many British and Continental breeds have been "adapted" to such zones by incorporating a relevant percentage of Brahman blood. Synthetic breeds have resulted from such crossings: Brangus - Braford - SimBrah - ChaBray - BeefMaster. These are just a few examples of Brahman popularity.

    Characteristics

    All Bos indicus cattle including the Brahman are characterised by a large hump over the top of the shoulder and neck. 
    Brahmans vary in colour from very light grey or red to almost black. A majority of the breed are light to medium grey. Mature bulls are normally darker than cows and usually have dark areas on the neck, shoulders and lower thighs. 
    They have short, thick, glossy hair which reflects much of the suns rays and black pigmented skin, making it able to graze in the midday sun without suffering. Their horns curve upwards and sometimes tilt to the rear plus they have pendulous ears.

    Brahman have an abundance of loose skin which is thought to contribute to its ability to withstand warm weather by increasing the body surface area exposed to cooling.
    Another feature of this breed is the increased number of sweat glands and the ability to sweat freely, Bos indicus cattle also produce an oily secretion from the sebaceous glands which has a distinctive odour and is reported to assist in repelling insects. 

    Brahmans are intermediate in size among beef breeds. Bulls will generally weigh from 1600 to 2200 pounds and cows from 1000 to 1400 pounds in average condition. The calves are small at birth, weighing 60 to 65 pounds, but grow very rapidly and wean at weights comparable to other breeds. 

    Brahmans are intelligent, inquisitive and shy. They are unusually thrifty, hardy and adaptable to a wide range of feed and climate. However, these characteristics also suggest careful, kind handling methods. Brahmans like affection and can become very docile. They quickly respond to handling they receive, good or bad. Well bred, wisely selected and properly treated Brahmans are as easily handled as other breeds. 

    They are also good mothers and produce a very satisfactory milk flow under conditions that are adverse for best performance of the European breeds. 
    Cancer eye is almost unknown in the breed. They have established a considerable reputation for a high dressing percentage,

    and their carcasses have a very good "cutout" value with minimum of outside fat.

    Comparative

    Studies at the University of Missouri found that Brahman and European cattle thrive equally well at temperatures down to 8° F. They found that European cattle begin to suffer adversely as the air temperature goes above 70° F, showing an increase in body temperature and a decline in appetite and milk production as 75° F, is passed. Brahmans, on the other hand, show little effect from temperatures up to and beyond 105° F. Although heat tolerance is only one factor in environmental adaptation of cattle, it is considered the most important.

    Another factor contributing to the great heat tolerance of Brahmans, discovered in the Missouri studies, is that they produce less internal body heat in warm weather than do cattle of European breeds. Waste heat is produced from feed at the expense of growth and milk production. 

    Distribution

    The Brahman is very popular and has been exported from the USA to many beef cattle producing countries including Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa and Australia.
